MG Ardennes 2021

MG Ardennes
15th – 19th October 2021

The Belgian Ardennes is one of Europe’s unspoilt areas and the vast broad-leaf forests make it the perfect location for a colourful autumn break. We will be visiting quiet historic villages, spectacular castles, fast-flowing rivers and ancient abbeys as we explore this beautiful area. Our base for this driving holiday will be the former Chateau de Lesse, now a four-star hotel. Located in a quiet country lane, close to the historic town of Dinant, the hotel offers contemporary rooms, each with individual character. The hotel also offers an indoor swimming-pool, an excellent bar, bistro and restaurant.

Suggested Itinerary:

Friday 15th October
Check-in at 09:00hrs for the 09:50hrs Eurotunnel crossing to Calais. From Calais we drive east via Lille on to Tournai in Belgium. There is an option to stop here at the amazing Mahy-mobiles car museum in Leuze-en-Hainaut, where more than 300 cars and motorcycles have been collected by one family since WWII. Continuing on from the museum we head further south to the Belgian Ardennes, to the Hotel Castel de Pont-a-Lesse, near Dinant. Evening meals are included during your stay.
Approximate driving distance: 185 miles (4 hours + stops)

Saturday 16th October
We have a relaxing day planned, so that people can explore the local area. After a leisurely breakfast, it is possible to relax in the hotel and enjoy the “wellness facilities”. For a dip into some culture it is also possible to visit the heritage town of Dinant on the hotel’s doorstep. The town is famous for its citadelle that dominates the skyline as well as the cable-car that can take you to its summit. Alternatively, you could choose to visit the former convent that overlooks the winding river that is now the Leffe beer museum!
Approximate driving distance: 4 miles (15 minutes + stops)

Sunday 17th October
Today’s road run allows us to explore the Ardennes countryside, taking in the variety of colours that nature provides at this time of year. Of historical significance is a concrete bunker in the forest near Bruly-de-Pecsche. This unassuming building became Hitler’s High Command in the summer of 1940 during the battle for France. The site is now home to a museum and memorial, recalling the devastating effect of Hitler’s presence on the local community.

Just a short distance away is the town of Chimay. As well as being a good lunch stop, there is a museum, shop and abbey that are worth visiting. The town also gives its name to Wallonia’s most famous beer. Originally brewed by Trappist Monks at Scourmont abbey, the beer is now sold throughout Europe. The abbey itself may appear closed, but once through the wooden door, it opens up into hidden gardens.
Approximate driving distance: 100 miles (4 hours + stops)

Monday 18th October
The charming town of Durbuy claims to be the smallest city in the world. We will be visiting Durbuy to explore its ancient walls, which surround the old cobbled streets & hide the treasures within. The historic heart of the city contains a maze of cobbled, pedestrianized lanes, flanked by old stone buildings. The oldest road, Rue Daufesne de la Chevalerie, is entirely paved with pebbles taken from the meandering river Ourthe that passes the city. Durbuy now spreads beyond its walls, where the castle sits on a rocky bluff over the town.
Approximate driving distance: 70 miles (4 hours + stops)

Tuesday 19th October
Following breakfast at the hotel, we make our way home from the Ardennes, back in to France and return to Calais, for an afternoon Eurotunnel crossing at a time of your choosing.
Approximate driving distance: 185 miles (4 hours + stops)
